Considering we pay gio and brodie for less than subban himself gets paid, I'll take this deal any day |

Look at the Corsi numbers for Brodie & Gio & they are elite & some of the best in the league. After that, Russell is a distant 3rd but to have a top pairing d & 2 goalies playing great is a heck of a way to rebuild around & allows our young players to develop & make mistakes. Something the Oil do not have, even with 3 1st overalls.
Great contract. We just need to trade Sven for Larsson or Gormerly to balance our NHL ready prospect pool. |

My thought was it is too bad they couldn't squeeze a little more term out of this contract (5 years is great don't get me wrong). My guess is that it was a case of compromise... a nice chunk of guarenteed money at a reasonable hit for the next five years... then he will get a chance to take it to the bank still in his prime if everything pans out. Good win for both sides.
Hard to dislike this Calgary team. They just work so hard and even though they are a little thin (or maybe just young) up front.... They are giving themselves a chance to win each night. |

I think Calgary is a place where few people watch so Brodie flies under the radar....like Gio did for so many years. I think Brodie is worth $4.6 right now and he should only get better. The sky is the limit with him.
I like the fact that there was absolutely no drama to the negotiation. Obviously, Brodie likes what's going on in Calgary and was happy to commit long term. |

They are so much more fun to watch than the bubble old team we had year after year. Really too bad Bennett got injured, it would have been nice to see what he could do with 9 games. He looked real good in exhibition. Him, Monahan & Gaudreau are 3 nice gems to build around & Backlunds Corsi/possession numbers, especially combined when Gio & Brodie are on the ice are something else. His offence hasn't equated to being a top 2 line centre but he would be that elite 3rd line centre that would win teams championships. Net & LW we are solid & we have that top 2 D. But RW is meh & we really don't have much in the pipe coming up on D. We have several 21-22-23 year old forward prospects knocking at the door but caught in a log jam. Sven is a close version to Turris in Phoenix. Great offensive skills, playing a way better 200 foot game but frustrated he can't crack the lineup. A change of scenery like maybe Larsson or Gormerly might need would be a good deal for all the teams because Phoenix & Jersey are loaded with good young dmen & maybe could use a young forward (Sven is only 22) with lots of upside on offence. Even the Pens or Sabres could be not bad trade partners. |

there in lies the key. I think the Calgary's and Edmonton's of the world are tough places to attract FA's, at least the big names so its good to see a player that was drafted by the team, and brought through the system to make it to this level.
Great for the team! |

Or maybe we can help the Kings cap situation and take Doughty off their hands...Sven, a D "prospect" and a first???

I agree with this. It's hard not to like what's going on in Calgary right now. What really stood out to me was when we signed Bennett in June. It was all over the news how excited he was to join Calgary and that Monahan had been hyping up team and how great the atmosphere is. Of course Brodie was happy with the deal, he got a significant pay raise with a lot of time left on his current contract.
It's crazy how much of a difference little things like this make. Look at how bad Edmonton is doing.. nobody wants to play, nobody cares about winning, and players want out.

Brodie deal is an awesome deal for the Flames. 5 years for under $5 million a season for a top pairing d-man that is on a point per game streak to start this season. I would say thats a fantastic deal for the Flames. |

Great value now in that it gives Flames more flexibility with cap floor in regards to expensive dead weight like Jones should they decide to make a move in the near future. Added benefit is he is locked up so that in the term while all the new players are coming on stream he won't be an albatross contract later. |

Brodie better than McDonagh? Bold statement. - rangerdanger94
It depends on your criteria.
Brodie plays slightly tougher competition, starts in his own zone more often and finishes in the offensive zone more often. He drives possession more effectively, has virtually identical TOI, and he's 3 years younger.
McDonagh scores more points, although Brodie's dominating him in that category so far this season.
McDonagh's also more physical, but that doesn't necessarily make him more effective. |

I like Macdonagh, He really broke out last year and his playoff performance was stellar. It was the statement "I don't think Brodie is on their level of value right now" that got me. When the end of the season rolls around I believe you will find Brodie's stats to be better then all of those players and on a much worse team. |

McDonagh is a top 10 defenseman in the league comparable to guys like Keith, Hedman, Pietrangelo, Suter, Weber, etc.
Brodie simply isn't in that tier yet. |

According to what?
He was 17th in scoring last year, so clearly your statement has more to do with overall ability than pure offense...
If Brodie is better than McDonagh in each of the categories I mentioned, then how can McDonagh possibly be not only better, but top 10 when Brodie isn't? |

Having more fans among the Norris voters doesn't necessarily make you better. It's the big market effect. |
